About the Cardinia Shire
Located to the south east of Melbourne, Cardinia Shire has a total area of 1,280 square kilometres. The
population according to 2016 census was 95,992. The Shire is a delightful mix of vast urban residential
lands and rural areas where agriculture is the dominant economy. Agricultural land comprises 77% of
the total land area in the Shire with a parkland totalling 14%. Motor vehicle manufacturing is the other
major industry in the Shire.
The local economy as measured by the gross regional product (GRP) was $2.89 billion in 2016. Main
industries include beef and dairy farming, horticulture and viticulture. Asparagus and potato growing
and eggs are other popular industries. The Shire is situated at a distance of 55 kilometres from
Melbourne GPO. The Shire is also well connected by the Bass Highway and the Princes Freeway and
railway lines.
Some popular shopping centres in the Shire include Arena Shopping Centre, Heritage Springs
Shopping Centre, and Beaconsfield Plaza among others. The area is served by Koo Wee Rup Regional
Health Service and Cardinia Casey Community Health Service among others. Manufacturing was the
major contributor for exports that reached $250 million in 2016 with produce being the largest
commodity exported.
